“..Try this variation of affogato with matcha. Basic and can be quickly done under 5 minutes, you’ll want to have a second go..”

An affogato is a coffee-based dessert originated from Italy and now famous worldwide. Living in the tropics with a serious addiction to coffee (yes!), it’s the perfect treat for me to beat the heat. It usually costs about $6 – $8 per servings in local cafes and more sometimes.
But I also enjoy making own my own at home using the Nespresso machine and ice-cream or gelato I happen to have at home. My current favourite is Häagen-Dazs Vanilla ice-cream – decadent and not too sweet, when it starts to melt the coffee turns extremely creamy and rich, absolutely blissful – if you like that sort of texture, you know, that velvety-ish sort on the palate.
Creating my own Affogato at home lead to my imagination running. I’ve recently made another matcha purchase from Panatea and then it happened – a Matchagato (or Matcha Affogato). Like my coffee, I like my matcha strong, green and slightly bitter and when poured over the Häagen-Dazs Vanilla ice-cream, it’s match made in heaven.
Serves 1. Double up accordingly to serve more.
You’ll need:
A teaspoon or less of culinary-grade matcha (got mine from Panatea!)
100-150 ml Warm water
Matcha whisk or handheld frother whisk
A good scoop of Vanilla ice-cream, or any flavour of your choice! You can opt for non-dairy types or frozen yoghurt for a healthier alternatives.
To make:
- Sift matcha powder into a bowl large enough to whisk later. I spotted this gorgeous set from Rikumo. (Consider investing in a good bowl to last you a long time! It also completes your whole experience of sipping matcha.)
- Pour the warm water and start whisking the matcha. I prefer to use the handheld frother because it’s quicker and gives an equally good coat of froth.
- Scoop your ice-cream into a petite cup or bowl, then pour the frothy matcha over. Serve and enjoy immediately!
